I did not learn fly fishing in a straight line.

Over roughly fifteen to twenty years, I started and stopped fly fishing several times. Each time I returned, I ran into the same questions that discourage many anglers: Which fly should I use? How should I rig it? Where should I cast? What should I change when nothing is working?

There was no shortage of information. The problem was knowing what information mattered while standing beside the river. Books, videos, shop advice, hatch charts, and fly boxes often provided pieces of the answer, but I still needed a clear way to connect what I saw to what I should do next.

River & Ridge is being built to close the gap between learning about fly fishing and making confident decisions on the water.

The Trout Confidence System combines a carefully organized physical fly box, field decision guidance, progressive training, and river-specific intelligence. The goal is not to remove judgment from fly fishing. It is to give anglers a logical starting process so they can learn from each presentation instead of changing flies and rigs at random.

I want River & Ridge to help anglers learn, experience success, remain in the sport, and eventually trust their own decisions. The Upper Au Sable was chosen as the first River Intelligence system because it provides a meaningful Michigan starting point and a demanding environment in which the system must prove that it can teach, not simply sell flies.

Conservation, responsible fish handling, water-temperature ethics, access respect, line disposal, and practical stewardship are part of the system because confidence also means knowing when and how to fish responsibly.
