Begin with what the river is showing: rises, bulges, flashes, or no visible activity. Those clues direct you to one of the box’s three organized sections: Surface, Film, or Subsurface. The decision card in that section guides you to a starting fly, rig, and presentation. After you fish that starting presentation, follow the adjustment path in the box to decide what to change next.

Fish rising? Start in the Surface section of the box.
The Surface decision card points you to a starting fly. From there, follow the matching rig and presentation, then fish the same feeding lane long enough to evaluate the result. You do not need to identify every insect or search your phone before you can begin.
Bulges, fins, or incomplete rises point to Film. Flashes below the surface or no visible activity point to Subsurface. The clue changes, but the process stays the same: observe, choose the correct box section, follow the card, fish the starting presentation, and then adjust through the box.
